Monday 1st February 2021

A busy week at MCR. We’ve had owners in most days, and are looking forwards to a busy owners day in a few weeks time…. I wish!!

Oh how we miss normality, going racing and socialising… although we have got some runners this week!!

CaptainOfIndustry was meant to head to Hereford today but unfortunately it was abandoned due to the heavy rainfall.

Clondaw Bunny heads to Warwick on Wednesday. It’s a competitive race and on paper we look outclassed, but our horse is fit and well and desperate to run. He’s in the form of his life after his fantastic run at Wadebridge in December. David Bass rides.

Knockaderry Flyer is entered at Wincanton on Thursday. Knockaderry has had a year off due to injury, but he’s fit and as enthusiastic as ever and is will still provide a lot of fun for his group of owners. He will come on for the run. David Bass rides.

CaptainOfIndustry and Knockaderry Flyer are both entered at Weatherby on Saturday. CaptainOfIndustry has had a few seasons away from the track with a injury but came back team chasing and doing hunt races. Danielle Riley owns him and the plan was always to have some fun with him and to run in novice rider point to points. With pointing being off and him working as well as he is at home, it seems a shame not to give him a run. He’s sure to improve for a run and blow away the cobwebs. James Nixon rides.

Professional jockeys James Nixon and David Bass have both been in to ride out this week. Essential travel to get to know their rides before they ride them at the races this week.

David Bass rode a grade 1 winner for my former boss, Kim Bailey last weekend. A fantastic ride and brilliant for Kim, assistant Matt and the team. It’s great to see local trainers doing well. That was Kim’s first grade 1 winner in 25 years!

Looking at the entry’s for the hunter chases always sparks the debate about licensed trainers running horses in hunter chases. I can see both sides to the argument. It’s an amateur oriented sport and it does feel unfair to let licensed trainers dominate it with expensive, highly rated, talented horses off level weights, but at the same time, you can’t blame the trainers as there is a race there to be won and rules allow them to run… a tricky debate. Many top horses are actually very well in off the weights which can look an attractive prospect to a hot Saturday handicap.

Other yard news…

We worked Heist, Knockaderry Flyer, Clondaw Bunny and CaptainOfIndustry

And also schooled the Schiaparelli filly for the first time. She’s a natural and great to see!

A chilly and wet week but we’re pleased to be slightly busier with a few runners.

Finally Happy Birthday Danielle Riley. Danielle was delighted to bring her favourite horse Cloudy Joker back into ridden work today.

Stay safe
